Marion Mercedes Westgate, born February 27, 1917 at Regina, Saskatchewan, attended Regina College and the University of Saskatchewan where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937. While working at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Regina, Westgate enlisted at Calgary, Alberta May 15, 1943. Westgate served with the Royal Canadian Air Force (Sic Itur Ad Astra) attached to No. 15 Elementary Flying Training School as a Flying Officer (Nursing Sister) during the Second World War. On October 27, 1943, Flying Officer (Nursing Sister) Marion Mercedes Westgate died following the crash of a Cornell aircraft near Regina due to heavy fog. Westgate is commemorated at Regina Cemetery, Saskatchewan. Daughter of Robert James and Christie Mercedes (nee Sneath) Westgate of Regina; sister of Robert Owen, James Allan and Frederick Gordon; she was 26 years old. The only Nursing Sister to die in the Second World War, Westgate Lake, west of Cree Lake in Saskatchewan is named in her honour.
